My feelings on school fundraisers

If I haven't yet made myself perfectly clear on school fundraisers, my position is simple: I hate them. Hate may not even be strong enough. I HAAAAAAATE them. I'd much rather write a check for $100 at the beginning of the year, buy my kids a couple plastic prizes on my own dime, and call it a day.

So, imagine my surprise when my friend at the kids' school asked, "I'm the organizer of the Book Fair this year, will you help me?" and I heard myself answer, "Sure."

"Sure."
It slipped out so quickly I didn't even hear it coming.

"Sure."
Which means I'm helping with the God awful Book Fair that I try to stay away from every year. I relish the idea there there is a "Dad's and Donuts" morning so HE can go buy them a couple of books and I can stay the hell away from that place.

"Sure."
Damn.

I think it's when they ask so off-handedly that I don't see it coming. Hopefully the fair won't last very long!

I know what you mean but just imagine if its part of your job like it is for me. Last year My principal ASKED me to do the wrapping paper fundraiser because he knew I had experience from a previous school. I politely declined and he came back the next day and said I had NO choice.

I am SOOO with you on fundraisers, however, my only exception is the book fair. For some reason, that one doesn't bother me as much. Maybe because it's about, oh, READING, as opposed to, um WRAPPING PAPER!

OK, I have to agree, the Gift Wrap fundraiser is by far worse than being on the decorating committee for book fair. It's not that I even have to WORK the book fair - as scholastic does that part for us... I'm just pissy that I agreed to something like this. It is so not like me to help.

I'm room mother. I plan the Winter and Valentine parties. I plan kindergarten continuation... I just don't DO fundraisers.

What you don't like hitting on your friends/families wallet? I'm shocked (and well, relieved, because what goes around/comes around).

Wait a minute: Scholastic staffs your book fair? That's it...I'm so jumpin' ship now!

(nah, I just patronize the book fair, I no longer feel the need to assist. And I"ll keep my rant on that topic to myself thank.you.very.much).

Scholastic staffs the book fair for a price. They get a percentage for doing it.

Rant. Rant. Rant. Rant. We want to hear you rant!!
